International Cricket Council (ICC) will host the ninth ICC T20 World Cup, a biennial Twenty20 International (T20I) competition involving men’s national teams. Co-hosting the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 from June 1 to June 29, 2024 will be the United States and the West Indies. This is the first-ever ICC World Cup tournament, with matches taking place in the United States and anywhere in the Americas outside of the West Indies. England has been the defending champion, having defeated Pakistan in the title match of the previous edition.
Twenty teams in all, including the two hosts, will compete in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, an increase from the 16 teams in the 2022 competition.
World Cup 2024, four groups of five teams will be formed from the 20 qualifying teams. The top two teams from each group will then move on to the Super 8 round. Following this, the qualifying teams will be divided into two groups of four. From these groups, the top two teams from each will advance to the knockout phase, which consists of two semifinals and a championship match.
The United States and the West Indies will host the T20 World Cup according to an announcement made by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in November 2021. As part of a strategic partnership between the two associations, Cricket West Indies and USA Cricket jointly submitted a bid after two years of planning.
In 2022, the eight teams from the previous competition and the tournament hosts automatically qualified for the ICC T20 World Cup. The top-ranked teams in the World Cup 2024 rankings as of November 14, 2022, also secured automatic qualification if they hadn’t already qualified. Additionally, regional qualifiers determined eight more teams: one from the Americas and East Asia-Pacific, and two each from Africa, Asia, and Europe. Ireland, Scotland, and Papua New Guinea were the first three teams to qualify through their respective regional qualifiers.
New Zealand was the first team to reveal their tournament roster on April 29, 2024. Subsequently, South Africa, India, and England announced their squads the following day. By May 1, the deadline for squad submissions, Australia, Afghanistan, Oman, and Nepal had also unveiled their teams. The next day, on May 2, 2024, Canada announced their team for their first-ever T20 World Cup.
Following this, on May 3, 2024, both the United States and the hosts, the West Indies, revealed their squads. A few days later, on May 6, 2024, Scotland and Uganda, who are newcomers, disclosed their squads. Soon after, Sri Lanka revealed their team on May 9, 2024, while Papua New Guinea and Ireland did so on May 7, 2024.
Finally, on May 10, 2024, Namibia revealed their team, and the Netherlands followed suit on the same day.
A World Cup bidding process was started by CWI in May 2023, drawing interest from both the US and the Caribbean. Subsequently, in July 2023, the ICC shortlisted four American locations: a stadium in the Bronx of New York City, Grand Prairie in Texas, Morrisville in North Carolina, and Lauderhill in Florida. However, on September 20, 2023, the ICC decided to choose Grand Prairie and Lauderhill as the venues. This decision came in response to opposition from Bronx residents, who raised concerns about restricted park access, environmental impact, and financial sustainability.
